In the fall of 2012 Chris Eley and Khiana Wiley discussed giving back during the holiday season. Their original idea was to anonymously leave gifts at the doorsteps of Newark residents late at night. Concerned with their safety, Khiana suggested that Chris create an alternative. Thus, K Heart was incorporated the following month.
Early on, the duo faced obstacles bringing their vision to life. Chris and Khiana, who were 19 and 16 at the time had few connections, but were determined to make it happen. Chris, who grew up under the poverty line in Newark, had a childhood dream to give in ways his parents often couldn't provide. So, the two entrepreneurs decided to find the recipients for their event through Newark's Public School system. After interviewing 25 children facing hardship they had a wish list to fulfill.
With no funds outside of Chris' paycheck and Khiana's savings, they decided to employ Chris' mother Beatrice as the organization's secretary. The new partner began marketed the event at the doctor's office where she worked. Several patients and eventually doctors began donating to their cause.
In the meantime Chris was door knocking and seeking help from local businesses while Khiana collected donations from her teachers. Within three weeks the team of three had raised $4000. When December 19th came they had enough food and gifts to accommodate all of the families.
After a successful first event the team decided to design a n organization that could bring creative solutions to local and global problems. K Heart has since grown to influence several areas of change. But, the holiday feast still stands as the crown event of the year.
